Well we absolutely LOVE Halloween around here and can't wait for it to arrive every year. Especially now that we have small kids to dress up and take trick or treating. It really is too bad we live so far out in the country that no one comes to visit us on Halloween as that was my favourite thing when living in the city!
We have some tips and "tricks" for helping your pets survive the chaos of this special night.
- If you are taking your dogs out walking with you and the kids for your trick or treat excursion remember to put something reflective on them too (we have awesome collars that are nice and bright to help with that!). It gets pretty dark out there, pretty quick!
- Remember to keep your dog on a regular 6ft lead, extenable leashes are easier to get tangled up with the excitement and harder to find in the dark when all wrapped up around a costume! Keep them close as the little ghouls and ghosts can be pretty intimidating and there tend to be a lot of things to "eat" that fall out of bags when the kids run that might not be safe for your pet.
- Keep an eye on the stress level of your dog, there are so many things going on out on the streets on Halloween that many dogs are overwhelmed and which point they'd be safer at home in their kennel or favourite room with a special treat or toy (Antler's work awesome for this!)
- When handing out candy at the door, it is always safer for your four legged friends to be in a kennel (cats and dogs included in that) far away from the action! Remember this is their home too and they don't understand why all these spooks come to the door! You'll also prevent anyone from accidentally running out the door!
- When dressing up your furry-kids in their costumes, remember to check the fit! Ensure their eyes aren't covered, that their mouths can open wide enough for them to pant and drink, that their legs are free enough to run and that it is not too tight around the neck!
- Most of all.... HAVE FUN!!!!
